Toy soldiers

We were all given a random object from the pound store to start this project. I was given toy soldiers and after being inspired by Kumi Yamashita’s work, I decided to try and create some graphic work through the use of shadows. I began by using light to see what shapes could be created using the soldiers and to my excitement, I realised that when they lay on their backs they produced heart shadows and when laying on their fronts they produced rose shapes.

Using well known phrases to do with love and war, I created some graphics to link with the shadows. I wanted to create a 3D art piece which could be lit up in someones room, so I researched different lighting sources and how the piece would look. My final idea was an acrylic dome covering the front of the piece and then used diodes as the light source (at the bottom) which could be changed to light up the display in different colours.
